Dart Poison Frog

Private Collection
“Dart” was a commission for an old school friend and fellow entrepreneur. She had asked me for nothing more than a colorful painting of a frog, so I was free to explore all sorts of options. I took the opportunity to revisit a favorite subject of mine, the dart poison frog. When I first began seriously making the transition from fantasy art to animal painter in my early teens, one of my first consistent bodies of work was a series of dart poison frogs. At the tender age of thirteen, most of my paintings and drawings were composites of reference materials culled from books and magazines, and this series was no exception. Armed with as much research as I could find (but not a single personal experience with one of my subjects) I set to work producing large scale illustrations of frogs. It was years later when I saw dart poison frogs in an aquarium that I realized how far I’d missed the mark. While my work had not been “inaccurate,” the scale at which I chose to work failed to capture the magic of these tiny, gem-like animals. I’d known that these frogs were small from my research, but not having seen them in person I’d chosen to approach them differently than real life experience would have demanded. It was the first time I understood the importance of only painting what one knows from personal experience. At just 8x8 inches, and a life-sized representation of the frog, “Dart” resolves these issues. My next goal is to see these vividly colored amphibians in the wild…
