Bald Eagle

Private Collection
I was delighted when an existing collector came to me with a challenging and very open-ended idea for a commission. She asked that I paint her an eye- any eye- in a small, square format. As an artist, these kinds of carte blanche commissions are among the most enjoyable because they allow me to exercise my own fancies within only a very general framework. As a lover of birds, I knew I would paint a bird, but which bird!? After a lot of thought and a few explorations in more exotic directions, I decided to focus on a subject I have painted before, and will no doubt paint again, the bald eagle. As someone who appreciates the unusual, it is my general inclination to steer away from the expected and to eschew the prosaic and pedestrian as if my life depended upon it. For that reason, I resisted painting a bald eagle for many years, phrases like “it’s been done” echoing in my head; that attitude persisted until I actually saw a bald eagle. One encounter with a bald eagle and it was eminently clear to me why this is our national bird. Few creatures so embody power and freedom in such a beautiful, intimidating, and awe-inspiring package. The challenge here was to communicate my impressions of the subject with just a single eye!
