Belted Kingfisher

Private Collection
This piece was a commission for a friend and a gift for his wife, who has a particular place in her heart for kingfishers. I can hardly blame her. Though the Belted Kingfisher is a common bird throughout much of North America, I had never seen one until I moved to Antioch in 2011; the first time I saw one plunging from a tree into Contra Loma Reservoir to catch a minnow, I was hooked. On another amble around the same body of water, my partner ,Guy, was eager to experiment with a newly downloaded App on his iPad, the iBird, which has not only all the typical amenities of field guide, but also includes a wealth of recorded bird song. Armed with this clever device and a small portable speaker, we played the several second recording of a kingfisher call on a loop. Within minutes we were dive-bombed by a pair of very annoyed and very territorial Belted Kingfishers. They flew back and forth over our heads, shrieking in protest and hunting, fruitlessly, for the interloper until I made Guy turn off the audio. When our rude (and never again repeated) interruption in their routine was over, the female settled onto a branch long enough for me to snap a few photos…and those became the primary reference for “The Fisher Queen.”
