Mexican Wolves

Private Collection

"The Gathering" was a commission for a collector and friend in Arizona. She was interested in wolves, and while it's a wonderful animal, the idea presented something of a challenge. Early in my career, I had friends in Livermore, CA, with a beautiful timber wolf named Takai. Gary (one of the owners) is a very generous fellow and used to donate his time and Takai's presence for frequent educational appearances throughout the greater Bay Area, and he and his wife were more than happy to have artists like myself drop by their home. With perhaps one exception, every wolf I painted during the first ten years of my career was , in fact, this same wolf. When Takai passed away, I was left without a model. Fortunately both the Arizona-Sonora Desert Musuem in Tucson and the Living Desert in Palm Desert, CA, have Mexican Wolves. They're a bit different than timber wolves, but the larger problem was that photographing them in a zoo enclosure is much more limited than a one-on-one photo session with Takai. Fortunately, I was able to aquire just enough reference material to make "The Gathering" possible.
