How to Buy, General Information

All of my work begins with a study, or more often a series of studies. Often these preliminaries are just that, preliminaries. Other times, they develop quite nicely into artworks in their own right. I was working on several ideas for a large painting of diving pelicans to serve as a highlight among the pieces I was doing for the Cabo Pulmo show coming up at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. I had taken an absurd number of photographs of pelicans dipping and diving among the waves while on a field trip to Cabo’s National Marine Park, and I was suffering from option paralysis; too many ideas to filter out the bad ones.

As I narrowed my focus on the kind of larger painting I wanted to do, I decided a sequence of different stages of the bird’s dive was my best concept. “Diving Pelican Study,” though somewhat loose, was an important part of the process for me to crystalize my thinking before beginning work on this painting. With so many references to choose from, it was necessary to experiment with how well certain poses communicated the various stages of the typical pelican dive I wanted to convey. Though this piece does not describe the composition I settled on for the painting, it does in fact contain all but two of the final poses I chose to use. It is proof positive how valuable pre-studies can be in the artistic process.
