In 2018 and 2019 I was actively involved in Soysambu Conservancy’s Colobus Project. I helped raise money to translocate Guereza Colobus monkeys to the conservancy from nearby Kipipiri, where they were under extreme pressure due to major habitat loss and conflict with local farmers. It was an enormously successful project, and the colobus have now integrated into Soysambu’s ideal riverine forest habitat and begun to breed. This is one of the first successful translocations of its kind and serves to be a model for other similar projects in East Africa. Right now, Soysambu urgently needs to hire a full-time researcher to continue the post-translocation monitoring. Gathering scientific data is key to reproducing these results in other areas where primates are in danger from human wildlife conflict.

The painting, entitled “Her Shadow” is one of a very few primate paintings I have ever done. It was based on an encounter with a captive chimpanzee at the Oakland Zoo, and shares a poignant moment I experienced with humankind’s closest living genetic relative. “Her Shadow” was exhibited and sold in my last Solo Exhibition at Pacific Wildlife Galleries in 2008. The collector and friend who owned this piece has recently downsized her home and needed to find new homes for much of her collection. In an act of very touching generosity, she offered to gift this painting back to me. It is a piece that has always been very meaningful to me, but I would much rather it grace the walls of someone else’s home than mine, and I have made the decision to use it as a fundraising tool for a project I believe in. The moment I experienced with this beautiful animal helped foster my respect for primates, something I felt again in Kenya when I first saw Colobus in the wild. It seems only fitting to pay that inspiration forward and help Soysambu’s colobus project to have an even bigger impact in the broader tapestry of primate conservation.
