Of all the birds I’ve seen in Kenya, the hoopoe probably inspired the biggest burst of excitement upon first sighting. These beautiful, charismatic birds are not uncommon on the African continent, but their rare, scattered migratory appearances in Europe make them a creature of mystery and delight amongst birding circles. My first encounters with hoopoes in East Africa were brief and fleeting, but I finally had a dose of luck, as these things often happen, in an unexpected place. I spotted one foraging about in the dried grasses immediately off the veranda of the main house at Soysambu Conservancy where I was staying. I learned very quickly in Kenya that I should never be without my camera more than an arm’s length away, even during meals, and that morning’s breakfast proved no exception. This particular hoopoe was very engaged in his task, so I was able to get much closer than I’d anticipated to acquire reference material, and I had the additional privilege of watching him for more than ten minutes before he finally fluttered away. In “Hoopoe!” (the exclamation mark owing to my joy at the encounter) I wanted to explore not only the bird’s beautiful, lyrical shapes and unique, rufus pink coloration, but to allow the background grasses to merge into organic abstractions that underscore the elegant contours of the subject and suggest its quick, furtive movements.
