How to Buy, General Information

All of my work begins with a study, or more often a series of studies. Often these preliminaries are just that, preliminaries. Other times, they develop quite nicely into artworks in their own right; such was the case with “Parabola.” I was working on several ideas for a large painting of diving pelicans to serve as a highlight among the pieces I was doing for the Cabo Pulmo show coming up at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. I had taken an absurd number of photographs of pelicans dipping and diving among the waves while on a field trip to Cabo’s National Marine Park, and I was suffering from option paralysis; too many ideas to filter out the bad ones. So rather than obsessing over coming up with the composition, I decided to do some more refined pencil drawings in preparation. “Parabola” is the most finished among them. As it developed, the abstract background, with the bold parabola prescribing the graceful arc and downward momentum of the pelican’s flight path, became increasingly dominant, and eventually I hit upon the idea of incorporating the gold leaf. The use of the precious metal creates an interesting tension, both anchoring the shape with its solidity and imparting to it a buoyancy and lightness with its reflectivity. Such contrast is certainly appropriate for describing a pelican’s dive, which begins with the lilt of a hovering kite and ends with a shocking, lance-like plummet.
