Of course I see wild ravens quite frequently in the desert, but a semi-controlled photo shoot gave me a unique opportunity to gather reference. As often happens, I ended up with far more inspiration than I could tackle in one painting, so immediately set about sketching out ideas for how I could expound upon the raven-in-flight theme. This study, intended to be preliminary to a much larger acrylic on board, is one such effort. While much of the painting is negative space and the background is entirely abstract, one should not assume that this kind of simplicity is easy. Often times the fewer elements one has to work with, the more difficult achieving a solid composition can be. An abstract painter I once met said that sometimes the hardest thing in the world is to make something look like it �just happened.� In other words, the loose, gestural background, spontaneous splatters of paint, and areas of subtle value and color contrast, were all carefully considered, controlled where possible, and used strategically where the unpredictability of the paint was the primary challenge. The result is a very exuberant, explosive image that is, for all its beguiling simplicity, more complex than meets the eye.
