The idea for the “String Theory” series came to me while watching goldfinches hanging from a bird feeder at a friend’s home. I suddenly envisioned a vertically striped color field with birds swinging on one of the narrower stripes as if it were a cord. It struck me as a very different way to explore the same concept that initially inspired my “Modern Camouflage” series, the juxtaposition of flat and illusionistic treatments. The first such finished piece will debut in the UK in November of 2018 and features blue tits. This is a study for a follow-up piece, hopefully the first of many, and focuses on the common but beautiful mountain chickadee.
Because the birds are black, grey, and white, they lent themselves beautifully to graphite, and their monochrome quality left the door wide open to whatever color scheme I could imagine. In this case I went with a sophisticated but lively combination of carmine, pink, oxblood, and gold, a nod to the somewhat eastern-inspired composition.
