How to Buy

Bewick’s Wrens are among my favorite local birds. I simply love the way they are constantly in motion, flitting from branch to branch, their little tails flicking up and down nervously. The problem with painting one in any detail is that they are very hard to photograph, staying warily, as they most often do, deep in tangles of shrubbery and dense thickets, hence the title. Several years ago while walking around the Lafayette Reservoir, I had a rare opportunity to photograph one of these birds in the open, but when it came time to paint it, I wanted to honor the setting, or at least the feel of the setting, in which one would most likely encounter a Bewick’s Wren. The abstract background is intended to suggest not only the weave of branches in which the bird is hiding, but his quick and furtive motion through the branches.
