When my friends Susan Fox and Guy Combes and I camped in Anza-Borego Desert Park, we had blessedly little company of other human beings, no doubt because we were the only ones crazy enough to endure the 114 degree heat. Of course, that didn’t mean we were alone. When the evening finally began to cool, the scotch and soda came out and we came back to life. Our fun was interrupted by a persistent rustling sound, which we first took to be the wind, but which soon revealed itself to be desert pocket mice and one very plump Merrium’s Kangaroo rat (yet to be painted), dashing in and out of a Tostitos bag, which we hadn’t realized still had a few crumbs at the bottom. Thus followed over an hour hunching over the bag with cameras and flashlights poised to catch one of the little buggers in full frame. Before long, we emptied out the contents of the bag and watched as the mice filled their bulging cheek pouches and the crumb pile slowly disappeared. By this time, they had become accustomed to our presence, and the photo session ended with me crouched on the ground, macro lens inches from the remaining crumbs, trying desperately to focus on the mice in front of me…and not the ones darting between my legs. “ Leftovers” is, first and foremost, about capturing that experience.
