How to buy
I first visited England in 2012, and experienced what I always experience upon visiting a new country: I was entranced by the bird life. Fellow bird lovers understand, but everyone else looks at me with a bemused shake of the head at best, outright suspicion at worst, as I run off in a state of extreme excitement, tracking a bird that everyone else finds commonplace to the point of being banal. The Chaffinch is certainly a common bird in the UK, but I hope that anyone who takes joy in nature at all can appreciate their beautiful combination of grey, rose, rufus and olive. It is a color palette at once restrained and imaginative, and it comes in the package of a beautiful and energetic bird, somewhere between the size and shape of towhees and finches in the US. This bird was observed while I was visiting Simon and Monique Gudgeon at Sculpture by the Lakes in Dorset. Mo is an avid and accomplished garden designer, and much of the grounds were planted specifically to create wildlife habitat. I spent many hours watching these chaffinches amongst twists of Lonicera vine near one of the feeders. My goal was to create a piece to showcase the sense of balance, poise, and movement, as the finches bobbed and weaved, hopped and climbed, flew and fluttered in and among the webwork of gracefully twisting, criss-crossed branches.
