Sea Gull Drawing by Andrew Denman <Back to Thumbnails "Gull Study"
8.5 x 12" Graphite on Strathmore Paper
Franklin's Gull

How to buy
In 2011, I joined friends and fellow artists Guy Combes and Susan Fox on the East Coast for a road trip, which among other things included a visit to Chincoteague and Assateague Islands off the coast of Virginia. Susan, an unapologetic horse-lover, was excited to see the fabled wild horses of Chincoteague and Assateague, and, with the promise of great birding opportunities as well, we agreed. It was a spectacular day trip that included numerous encounters with wild horses (including one dramatic fight), huge numbers of terns, glossy ibis, grey catbirds, a host of other shorebirds and waders, and the very charismatic Franklin's Gull. I had never seen these dramatic black-headed gulls before and found their curious, cheeky personalities, lively breeding and territorial displays, and gorgeous colors fascinating. Given the reductive color palette, a gull seems suited to a black and white piece, but the Franklin's have striking red bills and eye-rings, so even in the context of a black and white graphite drawing, I had to let a touch of color creep in. I have yet to paint these beautiful birds, though I undoubtedly will, but for the moment, this drawing stands quite well on its own.
