"Hooded Oriole Drawing"

Hooded Oriole

SOLD

Several species of oriole, including Hooded Orioles like this one, are frequent visitors to the California Coast, especially during the Spring and Summer months. For many years, I eagerly anticipated the first sightings of brilliant orange birds high in the canopies of the huge oak trees around my grandparents' house in Lafayette, CA. Unfortunately, orioles are skittish, and I was never able to get a clear view of one up close, let alone shoot adequate photographs to serve as reference for a painting. But in 2011, I was fortunate enough to come across Hooded, Bullock's, and Streak-Backed Orioles during a trip to San Carlos, Mexico, an experience that would become "The Triumvirate," a large acrylic painting completed later that same year. This painting featured all three species as I encountered them, flitting about in the arms of a colorful, African Tulip Tree. I still find it humorous that I had to travel to another country to find a bird that is indigenous to my own backyard!

In this smaller drawing, also based on reference material I acquired during that same expedition, a hooded oriole drinks nectar from a hedge of flowering shrubs planted near the condominium complex where I was staying. I was fascinated with the bird's elegant posture as it dipped its long bill into the tubular flowers for a drink. In my opinion, sacrificing the oriole's hallmark palette of flame orange to the simple clarity of graphite does nothing to diminish this creature's startling exoticism.
