I’ve long been preoccupied with presenting animal subjects in an iconographic context, and “Pinnacle” certainly does that. The spindly, abstracted pedestal on which the hummingbird perches begins with heroic proportions in the lower part of the painting and rises to a tiny and delicate apex with the bird itself. It perches, jewel-like, a precious stone in a high setting. The use of the gold leaf further imbues the diminutive subject matter with new significance. The intention here is not to bludgeon the viewer with any particular conservation message, but simply to force one to stop and reconsider an animal that would be so easy to pass by unnoticed and to give it the attention it deserves.
