How to buy
I observed Tawny Eagles in the wild in East Africa in 2012, but the model for these four portraits was a captive bird at the International Centre for Birds of Prey in Newant, England, an amazing facility that boasts living specimens of nearly every species of raptor on the planet, all of which are glove-trained and flown daily. I spent a good deal of time watching this elegant bird, recording his shifting postures, the inquisitive turn of his head, and the ever piercing, watchful eyes. Approaching the bird as a quadtych allowed me to describe the subject from multiple vantage points, much as cubists approached their subjects, ultimately resulting in a fuller portrait of the animal than any one image could accomplish. Additionally, I’ve added an element of narrative progression, allowing the subject to move from gauzy suggestion in the upper left panel, to a detailed pencil drawing with thin washes of color in the upper right. In the lower left, a representationally realistic head emerges subtly from the under-drawing, while the bird on the lower right observes us with wickedly sharp detail amidst a swirl of suggestion created with my hallmark impasto under-painting technique. By combining these disparate techniques and stages of my process nakedly into one finished piece, the viewer is invited to discover not only the nuances of the Tawny Eagle, but the process by which it was painted.
