Grizzly Island Landscape with Killdeer
$7,500

How to buy
My friend and mentor during my early days of entering duck stamp contests, Rich Radigonda, took me to his duck club on Grizzly Island in the Suisun Bay to photograph birds. While there was plenty of wildlife to keep my shutter clicking away, I was most taken by an accidental photograph I took out the window of the car, showing an ominous grey sky above a tilted horizon line. Initial sketches for the painting made it clear that the viewer was seeing the setting from the point of view of the killdeer flying down the road ahead of us, hence the angled skyline as the birds bank and turn. As the project progressed, the landscape grew more and more dominant, and the killdeer eventually shrunk to mere footnotes, albeit vital exclamations of life and movement in the composition. Certainly it is the perspective and sense of atmosphere that take center stage in “Down Gum Tree Lane.”
