Morning Dove

How to buy
"Morning Light," has been on my artistic “to do list” for several years, ever since my trip to Joshua Tree National Park where I observed this beautiful mourning dove and other wildlife in the magical desert setting. Of course it was the abstract possibilities of the gloriously twisted collection of bare branches on which the dove was perched that most excited my imagination. The almost skeletal quality of these shapes bring to mind Georgia O’Keefe, whose love of the desert is palpable in here southwestern works. I used a more refined version of an approach I hadn't used in years, the shorthand of which is a detailed pencil drawing sealed under layers of clear acrylic, then gradually "washed" over with thin layers of color, yielding a delicate, light-soaked effect not unlike watercolor. The only opaquely applied acrylic in the entire piece is to be found on the head, chest, and shoulder of the dove and the foremost part of the branch on which it is resting. My priority in this piece was to capture the weightless atmosphere of a cool winter morning in the desert and the crystalline quality of the light. The combination of pencil and washes of transparent color seemed uniquely suited to this.
