How to buy
This drawing is a study for a small painting I completed for inclusion in the 2008 Western Visions Miniatures and More Show and Sale at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Like many of my bird-related atworks, I didn't need to travel far for the inspiration behind this piece. Even as a small child I was fascinated with the grape vines that climbed over our neighbor's fence every year, and which each winter would turn into woody, grey, abstract sculptures of converging lines and frozen tendrils. By the time I began "On Winter Wood," those vines had pulled the fence to a roughly forty-five degree angle and were bursting through every cracked and rotted board. The idea for this drawing and the subsequent painting came one foggy morning as I sat watching Golden-Crowned Sparrows flitting about in the twisting architecture of leafless winter vines, the first rays of the morning sun burning through the mist and edging the scene in golden light.
