I have always believed that an artist is simply an ordinary person who pays attention, and this painting explores that idea. Those of us who live in the San Francisco Bay Area encounter the ubiquitous Brewer’s Blackbird nearly every day in parking lots, parks, and on the sidewalk. I myself have referred to them for years as “parking lot birds”. But on a recent side trip to Palomarin State Beach, it was these demure and often ignored subjects that captured my attention, even amidst competition from stunning flocks of Brown Pelicans, cormorants, and more. As they waded through shallow puddles in a drainage ditch near the beach, the subtle iridescence of their feathers and the contrast between their hard black silhouettes and the reflection of the cold grey sky seemed elegant, quietly beautiful, and perhaps a bit magical. It is always my intention to draw the attention of my viewers to the little things they might otherwise overlook, and I truly hope this painting lives up to the challenge.
