How to buy
On my way home from a friend’s wedding in Washington State, I stopped at the Portland Zoo and was delighted to discover several aviaries of African birds, including these stunning Carmine Bea-eaters. Every so often, nature presents one with so astounding a palette that the best thing the artist can do is to stand out of the way. With this in mind, I chose to portray the birds against a mostly white background. The silhouettes of the Bee-eaters are deliberately hard and streamlined (dare I say, “Brancusi-esque”), and the geometric background patterns play off of these shapes. All the other elements, however, stay decidedly in the background and uncharacteristically pastel. The point of the painting is the glory of these sharp lances of color, at once dainty and strident against a snowfield of barely suggestive space; anything else would be superfluous.
