How to buy
I've loved Squirrel Monkeys ever since Indiana Jones' sidekick monkey scuttled on screen in Stephen Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Arc" when I was a child. Primates are a wonderful subject for animal painters, supplying fertile ground for explorations of emotion and expression not always afforded artists like myself who generally try to avoid anthropomorphisation. I encountered this particular subject at the Oakland Zoo in Oakland, CA. His movements, at once spry and hesitant, conveyed a sense of fragility I sought to capture in this painting. The tall, linear composition, abundance of negative space, and downcast eyes of the monkey all serve to convey this sense of delicate tension.
