Flamingos are so often painted that it can be a challenge to find a new way of approaching the subject, but that was my goal in “The Duel.” Like any animal, flamingos have the capacity for aggression, but their lyrical shape, soft pink coloring, and elegant poise have made them symbolic of grace and exotic beauty. I’ve always taken joy in defying expectations and inverting stereotypes, both in my life and my art, and painting flamingos fighting seemed as good a way as any. I’ve observed both Lesser and Greater flamingos fighting in captivity, usually during nesting, when cramped quarters and territorial instincts clash in ugly outburst of violence. I was captivated by the frantic snake-dance of writhing necks and the vicious, albeit brief, sword play of clattering bills. After years of unsuccessful attempts at every given opportunity, I was finally fortunate enough to snap some very good photographs of this activity while visiting Slimbridge Waterfowl Trust in England. Just a few short months later, I was standing on the shores of Lake Bogoria in Kenya’s Central Rift Valley watching hundreds of Greater Flamingos, tall and majestic amidst many thousands of Lesser Flamingos. These experiences are combined in “The Duel,” a painting which, I hope, strips the flamingo raw of our romantic projections without robbing this magnificent bird of its truly shocking beauty.
