Anyone who has observed Long-Tailed Tits in the wild knows that they scarcely stand still for an instant, and I’ve portrayed these birds in typically energetic postures, as though they are ready to hop to another branch or fly away at any moment. The placement of the birds in a circular shape, however, bridles this energy. Symmetrical elements always bring a sense of quiet balance to a work of art, and that is the intention here, to calm the nervous flutter of nature, to distill the experience into a timeless image. The circle could be an egg, a yolk, or a less literal symbol of the timelessness and cyclicality of nature. Either way, it forces a moment of quiet and calm, a quiet and calm which is, ultimately, more expressive of an ideal that of the reality of the subjects and their frenetic blurring of wings. The almost Jackson Pollock-like squiggles of greys, browns, and mauves outside this circle are an abstracted expression of the dense weave of branches that typically obstruct ones view of these delicately colored birds. For the purposes of my painting, these branches are swept aside, and the viewer is allowed to peer through the looking glass of art. That is, after all, what art is intended to provide; a window into the way the artist sees the world, and perhaps the revelation that comes with that glimpse.
