Bald Eagle

During a recent road trip, I had the distinct pleasure of spending time at Raptors of the Rockies, a raptor education center in Western Montana, and meeting its founder, Kate Davis, an amazingly energetic woman who counts leading raptor expert, professional wildlife photographer, award-winning author, and artist among her long list of credits. She introduced me to her birds, mostly injured non-releasables, with infectious enthusiasm. Of course, it rarely takes much to get me excited about birds, and there was plenty here to feast my eyes upon, but it was this bald eagle that most captured my attention. I’ve had occasion to see these birds in the wild, though only from a significant distance, but in the close quarters of captivity they always impress me with their great size and power. When one meets a bald eagle, it is immediately apparent why this is our National Bird. A few months later, I was a guest instructor at an artist workshop in Wyoming and sketched from the reference photos I’d taken of this eagle for a “Quick Draw.” The resulting drawing, a simple but powerful bust of this noble bird, was auctioned off to raise money for a charitable foundation, but the seed that drawing planted germinated into this painting. There is something very powerful about painting an animal-or any subject- considerably larger than life size. It works especially well with predators, where that increase in size only amplifies their dangerous and haunting beauty. A beguilingly simple painting, the bird bleeds off into the background past the shoulder, leaving only a bust, presented with the un-cluttered, iconic bearing of statesman, reminiscent of a stern portrait of a Founding Father. “Epic” is meant to communicate not only the beauty of this bird, but its symbolic significance as well.
