Despite having made my reputation painting primarily birds, rabbits hold a special place in my heart. There is something magical about encountering a bunny in the wild, and I always feel privileged to see them. Living in the lush, Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona, hardly a day goes by between Spring and late Fall without encountering at least one rabbit, and often many. They are such a common sight that my dogs, once unrepentant chasers of bunnies, barely react to them at all anymore.

Among my preoccupations as an artist is the treatment of subject matter, especially small, ubiquitous, and often overlooked animals, with iconographic significance. Perhaps because of their association with both the Pagan Eostre and the Christian Easter, or perhaps because of religious painter Albrecht Dürer’s “A Young Hare,” (certainly one of the most recognizable images in the history of wildlife art) I consider rabbits to be the perfect embodiment of Nature as Church.

In this painting, the rabbit is nearly centralized in the composition, this symmetry communicating the energy of an altarpiece or a stained-glass window. The bunny perches on the curve of a great sphere, suggesting the planet and all of its fragile and powerful wonders, with the red to orange, to yellow of the rising sun behind him. In this context, the bunny is a metaphor for a natural world under siege and the quiet, thoughtful, sensitive consideration that is required of us as good stewards of our world to see to it that the light of another morning shines on all of its inhabitants.
