The “Green Tunnel” series began during a recent trip to England. England is, of course, always green, but I arrived just a scant few weeks after record rainfalls and serious flooding, and even locals were commenting on the preternaturally green countryside. While driving to a friend’s house in a fairly rural area, I was captivated as we moved down impossibly narrow roads framed on either side by tall, dense hedgerows and shaded by a thick canopy of trees overhead. The effect was that of driving through a luminous green tunnel, at once beautiful and mysterious, suggesting at once the kind of magic evoked by C.S. Lewis and the charm of Beatrix Potter. Being a bird lover, I spent much of my time in England waiting patiently within camera range of garden bird feeders and stalking the fluttering promise of unknown bird wings through forest and field. Though Blue Tits, European Jays, Jackdaws, and European Gold Finches were a common site to my hosts, I was captivated. The idea behind the green tunnel series was to suggest, rather than describe, the feel of England’s verdant-walled rural back roads and to use that wreath-like arc of greenery to frame intimate portraits of the beautiful local bird species. The square format, central placement of the subject, and backlighting present these birds as icons, stained glass images in the church of mother nature. This European Robin is the fourth and final painting in that series.
