How to buy

When I first started traveling to the UK, the Green Woodpecker was high on my list of birds I wanted to see. The first several trips yielding nothing, the third, a very brief sighting at distance. It wasn’t until my fourth visit that the Birdwatching Gods smiled on me, and I finally had an opportunity to really see this marvelous bird.

I had been told that I was unlikely to see one in a tree, and to always keep watch on my Mother-in-law’s lawn- or any lawn- as these birds tend to hunt for insects in the soft, damp grass. Sure enough, that’s exactly where a pair of Green Woodpeckers materialized. I watched them for a good long while, absolutely mesmerized by their combination of bright, acid green, yellow, and just a splash of red. They also have a wonderful attitude, hoping about in the grass, all angles and quick movements, striking elegant pose after elegant pose. With their sturdy, compact bodies, large heads, and long, sharp bills, they look decidedly predatory as they stab about in the damp for their quarry. The aggressively splashy abstraction in the background is meant to suggest the birds’ quick, decisive movements while the strong, arcing line both acts as a counterbalance to the gesture of the subject and suggests its low, elegant flight as it came in to land on the lawn.
