How to buy
I encountered these five-week old Chilean Flamingo chicks while visiting the San Francisco Zoo, and I instantly conjured this painting in my mind. My primary interest in “The Grey Scale” was the variation and repetition of these fascinating, and decidedly “unflamingo-like,” ovoid shapes. Flamingos have long been one of my favorite birds, and are one of a very few subjects I have approached over and over again in multiple paintings. As a fairly ubiquitous subject in art, the challenge is to find something new to say, to present the subject in a way it has not been presented before. These huddled balls of grey fluff provided me with that opportunity. They become, in their indistinct and intriguing roundness, a conflation of bird and egg.

It is generally considered a compositional faux-pas to group subjects in even numbers, but the tightly bunched birds become one mass, balanced by dramatic light and shadow and a careful reversal of values in the background. The down and emerging feathers of these Chilean Flamingo chicks become a wonderful vehicle for my signature style as I transition between passages of extreme realism, stylization, and even abstraction. The palette of the piece is beguilingly neutral, its subtle greys and whites tinged with complimentary admixtures of yellow and violet, blue and orange.
