Iíve been fascinated with mythology, particularly Greek mythology, since my teenage years, and Iíve always found the Icarus story to be among the most potent and relatable of those stories. As an artist, my primary subject matter has long been birds, but Iíve explored figurative work now and again for years, and the Icarus myth inspired me as an opportunity to meld figure and feather in a context as full of graphic and visual possibilities as symbolic and emotional import.

The first in the series, ďIcarus in OvoĒ is a fanciful depiction of Icarus curled into a fetal position and housed within a non-literal representation of an egg, or perhaps the womb. Though he is a fully formed man and bears fully developed wings, his nudity and the physical position suggest the vulnerability and ignorance of youth. This is Icarus as we find him at the beginning of the classic narrative, helplessly imprisoned with his father in King Minosís dread tower. The umbilical cord morphs into a crack in the egg, foreshadowing the young manís tragic fate. It is worth noting that in this and subsequent pieces, I portray Icarusís wings as ďreal,Ē like the wings of an angel, rather than steam punk constructions of wood, wax, and feather, as in many representations. My own approach is a poetic, rather than a literal one.
