I often remove my animal subjects (most typically birds) from their natural environments, and surround them with forms and colors which suggest, rather than describe, my impressions of the subject and its surroundings. Here, the Ruby-Crowned Kinglet appears amidst graceful, arcing lines and splashes of color that were inspired by the bird's constant, almost frenetic movement. Kinglets are among my favorite birds, and the action of this pose perfectly captures the sprightly energy that makes these tiny and delicately colored birds so appealing to paint.
