Great White Egret

Great White Egrets are a common site in my local area and throughout much of the US. At one time, however, they were hunted nearly to extinction for their plumes; in fact, it was the crisis of the Great White Egret that compelled the creation of the National Audubon Society, which still uses the stately bird as its logo image to this day. I saw this individual at a local reservoir, preening its feathers while glowing in the wash of dramatic side-lighting. “Lady in White” captures a moment when the bird looked up from its task, looking simultaneously elegant in repose and ready for action, as these adept hunters often do. What most attracted me to this subject was the challenge of painting “white on white,” as well as the beautiful s-curve of the neck. It’s a simple image, and it was important to me for it to feel improvisational and uncluttered. Only the head is highly detailed, while the rest of the bird transitions into a loose and gestural treatment. This contrast extends to the background, which is purely non-objective, dominated by mysterious and smoky purples and blues and splatter patterns evoking the coiled, latent energy of the lady in white.
