The European Robin and the American Robin are, aptly enough, worlds apart. They are not related taxonomically, and actually share little in common at all, save that they are both perching birds. Visitors to England who are familiar with our chunky, jay-sized American Robins, will hardly recognize the tiny, round, jewel-like thrush that is the European Robin. I fell in love with them during my first trip to England and have explored them as subjects several times already. “Ovation” is the latest such effort. The composition is based on “Ovum”, my pencil drawing of a robin which was recently exhibited at the Works on Paper Art Fair at the London Science Museum. The main difference here is the introduction of color and rich textural treatments that pencil simply does not allow. I wanted to present this gem of a creature in a symbolic context, framing him within the shape of the egg from whence he came and echoing that ovoid motif in the background texture. I have long been interested in disassociating animal subjects from their habitats, not because I don’t enjoy their natural context, but because I like to present wildlife as icons. The square format, glowing background, and calming abundance of negative space combine with the hyperreal treatment of the feathers to present the bird as an object of worship and adoration. It is not a robin, but the robin, a gilded archetype in the pages of an illuminated manuscript.
