They are not related taxonomically, and actually share little in common at all, save that they are both perching birds. Visitors to England who are familiar with our chunky, jay-sized American Robins, will hardly recognize the tiny, round, jewel-like thrush that is the European Robin. I fell in love with them during my first trip to England and was very excited to pursue one as an artistic subject for a second time in “Ovum.” Intended as a study for a painting (which will also be available from Sculpture by the Lakes in the not-too-distant future) I wanted to present this gem of a creature in a symbolic context. Framing him within the shape of the egg from whence he came encapsulates the bird in a hieroglyph that is both restful and intriguing. Presenting him in black and white except for his beautiful pumpkin-orange face and chest further reduces the robin to its barest essentials. He appears, not just as a bird, but as a gilded icon in the pages of an illuminated manuscript.
