In 2009 I had the honor of serving as artist in residence at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. I had been to Jackson Hole in the fall and summer, but never before in the winter, and was amazed at how the typically bleak elk refuge comes to life with thousands of elk in the glistening snowscape. Though much of the herd separates, with bucks clustering together into small bachelor herds and the females and young doing the same, there was still plenty of mixing here and there. A long composition, such as this one, necessarily lends itself to narrative, and that’s what I was interested in here. The viewer follows the mixed group of elk as they move across the page and through different stages of life. Whether they are a family group or unrelated animals is entirely up to the viewer. As the elk trudge through the snow from left to right, they also transition between styles, loose and gestural to hyper-realistic, and non-objective to objective color. The inclusion of the blue and violet elk is, in part, a whimsical one, but it’s also a nod, however figurative, to the beautiful and mysterious cool colors that permeate the snowy landscape of Jackson Hole in winter.
