The very first time I visited Jackson Hole Wyoming I had my first and, to this day, best experience viewing the Teton bison herd. While parked near Gros Ventre Junction, I watched as they alternately ran and lumbered across the plains to drink at the river. It was very early in the morning, and there were several minutes during which the bison were hit with the most gorgeous raking morning light. Bison are wonderfully bizarre and primordial in appearance, but even more so in this kind of dramatic lighting where their shadowed hides take on beautiful and mysterious shadings of mauve, blue, and violet while their sun-stuck manes glow golden, bronze, and orange. A long and narrow composition like this one naturally suggests narrative, and that was my focus here. As the viewer moves from right to left, we follow the bison through stages of life but also as they transition between styles, from loose and gestural to hyper-realistic and from non-objective to objective color. The purple and red-violet bison are a deliberate exaggeration of the vibrant colors one can see in bison in a certain light. Here, they deliberately take on an unreality which, paradoxically, communicates as much about how I feel when encountering bison as their more “realistic” counterparts.
