How to buy

Early in 2024, Gallery by the Lakes in England, which represents both my partner, Guy Combes, and I, asked us to be part of a show called “Connected.” The exhibition would focus on the connections artists make with one another, with a special focus on artist couples. Though we were assured there was no theme required for the work, we thought it would be interesting if we both painted the same subject. Though we primarily paint wildlife, we’d both been wanting to explore figurative work. Our particularly elegant and handsome friend, Rory, said he’d be happy to pose for us, and so the project began.

We went on a hike to a clothing optional canyon on the far East side of Tucson, Arizona, and photographed Rory in gorgeous sunlight in a variety of scenic locations. I was particularly taken by this supine pose, the lines of the spine, and the prominent cast shadows. Though I began the piece in watercolor and acrylic, I eventually found it necessary to employ a final application of oil paint in order to achieve the softness of light and shadow and the subtleties of skin tone that were so important to the piece. Appropriately, the show opened in England on Valentines Day, and I hope our very different but both equally sensitive renderings of Rory played off of each other well.
