I take frequent walks around a local reservoir, and always enjoy watching the elegant silhouettes of egrets and herons stalking the shallows at dusk. In the encounter that inspired this painting, I followed this Great White Egret for some time, watching his careful movements as the setting sun painted the water with luminous pinks, corals, and golds, and the shadows fell into mysterious blues, violets, and periwinkles. The purpose of the quadtych format was to separate the various elements of what was a fairly lengthy wildlife encounter into specific and emblematic vignettes: the stealthy, calculated progression of the egret through the darkening waters, the abstract twists of tulle reeds, rising from the water like swirls of calligraphy, the steady, watchful eye of the bird as it pauses in its hunt, and finally the brief stab of motion and resulting ripple across the surface of the glistening water that signals the bird has seized its quarry. This is effectively a “field notebook approach,” a series of quick impressions carefully reconstructed into a piece of art that not only encapsulates one specific moment in time, but distills it into something true and definitive about the subject…and the observer.
