Having never been much of a photographer, I was thrilled and grateful for auto-drive when I discovered that I had managed to capture the heron just as he was taking off, with wings spread in a dramatic display. A celebration not only of flight, but of the joyous act of painting, I allowed the beautiful gesture of the bird to shift between the extremes of hyperrealsim and stylization and to inspire bold abstract shapes suggestive of upward motion. Even the word “Rise” so stubbornly asserted itself in my thought process that it became not only the title of the painting, but even included, quite dramatically, in the piece itself. It is my hope that viewers will partake of “Rise” the same mood of transcendence I felt in creating it.
