Though we have red foxes here in the US, on the West Coast where I live, one is much more likely to see the equally beautiful but less dramatic grey fox. I’ve already painted grey foxes several times, so I was understandably excited to encounter a real red fox in the UK. Amazingly, this encounter occurred in the heart of London late one night. We were out with friends when a fox came trotting along a largely empty street, clearly visible in the wash of the streetlamps. We let the car glide to a halt and watched the handsome animal feasting on some discarded chips. Amazingly, none of us, all four armed with cameras, thought to snap a picture. The reference or this piece came instead from a wildlife rescue center in Gloucestershire County where this and several other foxes were undergoing rehabilitation.

“The Sneak” is part of my pattern series, in which I reduce the subject to a silhouetted, stamp-like form, and repeat that shape to create a background pattern, pitting the animal against a mass-produced image of itself. With the inescapable pop art references, one is reminded of Andy Warhol’s soup cans or Wayne Theibauld’s regimented displays of puddings. In “The Sneak,” a fox, dramatically cropped in a composition inspired by Edgar Degas’s racetrack series, appears ready to explode into the painting, his eyes no doubt focused on an unguarded hen. Here, the army of foxes prowling the background serve to highlight his stealthy and wily movements.
