How to Buy, general info

Roadrunners were one of the first desert creatures to capture my attention when I started visiting Tucson. Bearing very little resemblance to the gawky cartoon that gave Willie Coyote such a run for his money in the Saturday morning television programing of my youth, these impressive birds are actually much more reminiscent of dinosaurs. Watching a Roadrunner hunt for lizards amidst the desert scrub, one canít help but be reminded of the velociraptors from Jurassic Park.

I observed this particular specimen in Sabino Canyon, a popular local hiking spot. Because there are nearly always people present, the Roadrunners here are notoriously habituated to human beings. My partner and I watched this bird at extremely close range for some several minutes as it rooted about in a sprawling clump of Prickly Pear for insects. It seemed completely unbothered by our presence as it snacked away on beetles and grubs.

In this painting, my primary goal was to capture the wonderful geometry of the bird. Roadrunners are a collection of angles, and they move with sharp, quick, halting precision. I hope the pose I chose to portray captures a sense of coiled energy, of a head-cocked pause in the moment just before decisive action. The background pattern features the familiar silhouette of the bird in a full run, with a deep, energetic turquoise, drawn from the birdís subtle iridescence, but also a deliberate nod to a traditionally Southwestern palette, dominating the image.
