How to buy
Nothing speaks to my ideal of the exotic quite like the ravishing and mysterious beauty of the black swan. I have vivid childhood memories of a man-made lake near a condominium community in Concord, CA that was, at one time, stocked with a plethora of wildfowl, including a pair of black swans. I remember being overwhelmed by their grace and unusual beauty, their long, sinuous necks rising almost snake-like from the water, their ruffled wing feathers held above the primaries like a Victorian lady’s bustle, and of course their glowing red bills. Years later, I came across a pair of black swans in another unexpected location, drifting about in the ponds and streams built around the elegant Black Hawk Shopping Center. This time I was armed with my camera, and I spent a good long while following their movements. “A Study in Black & Scarlet” is the result. I’ve contrasted the more detailed representation of the bird with stylized shapes intended to suggest rather than describe the graceful but continual motion of these birds as they bobbed and swayed above the gently babbling waters.
