How to buy

Tawny Owls are wonderful little owl with an extremely unmistakable song, a unique, mournful, trilling series of hoots. I heard them quite clearly on several trips to the UK, and always hoped to actually see one. I finally had my wild owl encounter while staying at a friend’s home in Dorchester, but being the middle of the night, it was hardly an opportunity to shoot reference photos.

That opportunity came with several visits to the International Centre for Birds of Prey in Newant, where I was able to spend a good amount of time with captive owls. Most owls, and these Tawnies are no exception, have very compact body shapes, and the silhouettes are not all that compelling, so an artist has to work a bit to find interesting and nuanced gestures. For me, it is the subtle little cocks of the head that communicate that essential “owlness.” I couldn’t decide between the many poses I found interesting, so I decided instead to put all three in the same piece to give the viewer a sense of the range of attitude these fierce little predators exude.
