How to buy

Pigs were probably my first love in the animal world, though I couldn’t tell you why. Perhaps an early childhood exposure to the tale of The Three Little Pigs? Whatever the reason, I rarely need much of an excuse to paint one of these charismatic animals. “This Little Piggy” came about after a visit to Cotswold Farm Park, near my extended family in England’s Gloucestershire countryside. Adam Henson, of TV’s Countryfile, created this park to preserve, and educate the public about the need to preserve, many of the UK’s vanishing heritage livestock. I have done a lot of work to help conserve wild animals and habitat, and as a gardening aficionado have long been aware of the dangers of monoculture and the need to preserve heritage seed strains, but I’d never given the same amount of thought to livestock. Fortunately, Cotswold Farm Park was there to educate me. I spent many hours photographing the many old and unusual breeds they maintain at the park, but a Large Black Sow, the subject of another painting, “Devon Diva,” stole the show. This painting depicts one of her many adorable piglets which I watched as they scurried, stumbled, rolled, and squealed about the park.

“This Little Piggy” is part of my pattern series, though I’ve chosen to use an abstract, polka-dot pattern in the background rather than the stamp-like animal forms that dominate most of the series. These polka-dots represent the ubiquity of the pig; this piglet was, after all, only one of an impressively large litter.
