In July of 2013, I had my first major exhibition at Astoria Fine Art in Wyoming. I had been working non-stop on new pieces for over five months, and I was desperately in need of a break, so I decided to take the opportunity of my visit to Wyoming to take a little side trip. I’d had a standing invitation to stay with fellow artist, Julie Chapman, and her husband near Missoula for some time, and this seemed like the right opportunity to take advantage of their offer. I always enjoy visiting new places, especially when staying with friends, because this kind of “back stage pass” helps to avoid the tourist experience in favor of something more intimate. I had a wonderfully relaxed five days, with plenty of excursions to observe and photograph wildlife, visits to a museum and gallery or two, but more importantly, some much needed down time. Julie’s home is very much, from the standpoint of a Bay Area native, in the middle of nowhere, so my unscheduled time was often spent wandering in the woods around the house following glimpses of the occasional chipmunk or bird. I spent several hours staking out a bluebird nesting box, watching its inhabitant flit from the box to a favored white fencepost and back again. This experience certainly inspired “Postmark,” but the loose, light, and unrestrained attitude of the piece is indebted to good friends and a sorely needed vacation.
