I’ve long been fascinated by birds of prey, particularly owls. Growing up in the suburbs of the San Francisco Bay Area, I have always lived at the margins of wild places, and raptors of all kinds are a frequent sight. Barn owls and great-horned owls are regular night visitors, and I’ve observed and painted them numerous times. During a recent trip to England, I made a visit to the International Centre for Birds of Prey at Newant, an extraordinary facility that houses captive specimens of nearly every species of raptor from around the world, from the familiar to the rare. All are kept in large aviaries, and all are glove-trained and flown out in the open on a daily basis. I was especially captivated by the snowy owls, a bird which I’ve never seen in the wild, despite having spent time in northern climates they frequent. I was captivated by the bird’s powerful presence and its fascinating color pattern, pattern and repetition being a recent preoccupation in my work. The challenge in this piece was to suggest, rather than describe the owl’s snowy winter habitat and to incorporate the soft periwinkles, violets, and cool whites of that environment into a piece for which my primary reference photos were taken in an artificial setting. Painting white on white is always a great challenge, but particularly in a case such as this where the nuances of color temperature had to be invented from my memories of time spent in the snow, a February in Jackson Hole, WY, and a December in Washington State providing the most vivid inspiration. Both to suggest the indistinctness that snowy weather often brings about and to satisfy my love of leaving evidence of the process by which the piece was created in the finished work, I chose to allow the subject to fade out into a graphite drawing that was first sealed under numerous layers of transparent acrylic.
